CHAPTER ELEVEN

ABBIE MET EMILY at the Watering Hole right after dinner Thursday night. Her new friend met her at the door with a bear hug. “Thank you for doing this. If it turns out to be too much, let me know.”

“No problem. You’re helping me out a lot, too.”

She was thrilled at a chance to make a little extra money. And working with Noah was a plus. Emily had talked to her about the job when she gave Abbie a ride home from the hardware store on Sunday. Now that Emily was working at her grandfather’s hardware store, she wanted to quit working at the tavern. Abbie had agreed to work until Freddy found a replacement, or until she went home, whichever came first.

She hadn’t said anything to Noah. Last night, while the two of them had been watching stars on her porch, she almost told him. Now she was glad she didn’t. She couldn’t wait to see the look on his face when he came in and saw her working there.

Emily introduced her to Freddy Macias, the owner.

“Thank you so much for letting me work here.” Abbie shook his hand. “I hope your wife is doing better.”

“She is, thanks,” the man said. “And I’m so glad that you were able to step in at such short notice.”

After Freddy gave her the rundown on the basics, how to ring up items in the register, where to put the empty bottles and things like that, Emily started schooling Abbie on everything from how to keep from spilling a tray full of drinks, to what to do with drunk customers.

Abbie knew the moment Noah walked into the tavern. His presence seemed to dominate the room. Maybe it was only because she was so aware of him. She was accustomed to seeing him in western wear and a cowboy hat, but he’d shed the button-up shirt for a plain black T-shirt that stretched across his broad chest. His hair hung to his shoulders. Without his cowboy hat on, he looked less like the Marlboro Man and more like Brad Pitt in The Legends of the Fall.

He did a double take when he saw her. She smiled and waved at him. He took a couple of steps toward her, but Freddy called him over behind the bar.

Emily’s gaze darted back and forth between the two of them. “What was that?”

Heat flooded her face. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yes, you do,” Emily said. “Is there something going on between you and Noah?”

“No.” Did she want there to be? That was an entirely different question.

Emily’s eyes narrowed. “Good. Keep it that way.”

Abbie’s pulse quickened. “What do you have against Noah?”

“Nothing. But he lives, eats, sleeps and breathes that ranch. That’s hard to compete with.”

She shrugged. “Don’t worry. I’m not interested in competing.”

Emily shook her head. “The ranch was never enough for Colleen. Anytime someone came along and dangled something better in front of her, she took off after it. I don’t know how many times she begged Noah to sell it.
